Heat Pumps

A heat pump is the most efficient way of heating and cooling your home. The outdoor condenser takes heat from the air outside, even in cool winter months, and heats air in your home through a 'conventional' system of heating ducts, the same as you'd have with a furnace system. As a result, a conventional electric or gas furnace is often used as a back-up system for those few days in the winter when the heat pump just can't grab enough heat out of the outside air. And, because of the similarity to a furnace system, heat pumps can often be added to homes with existing forced-air systems! Heating with a heat pump can save you 50% over conventional heating systems such as electricity, oil and even natural gas! Plus, you get the added advantage of an air conditioner for those hot summer days - the heat pump does it all! Many heat pump components by Amana carry warranties for 10 years to lifetime!

Fireplaces

Fireplace image
Remember having to clean out your old wood-fireplace? Ash flying everywhere, soot all over you... what a mess. And all the fireplace did was suck the heat out of your home!

Today's fireplaces are clean-burning, attractive units, which can supplement your home heating system or even act as a primary heat source! Natural gas and propane-fired fireplaces, inserts and free-standing stoves are quick to warm up and will produce heat within minutes of turning them on. Many are available without fuel-burning pilot lights, and they create an ambiance in your living area that can't be reproduced any other way. There's just something about the magic of a dancing flame to create a warm, friendly atmosphere.

Sensible Heating carries the full line of fireplaces by Heat & Glo - one of the worlds most respected manufacturers of affordable, efficient, leading-edge fireplaces. Many fireplaces can be converted from natural gas to propane, if you already have propane appliances or if natural gas service is not available in your area. We also carry an excellent selection of affordable electric fireplaces by Heatilator, for use in areas where a large amount of heat is not desirable, simply to add ambaince. Wood burning fireplaces and inserts are also very clean-burning and efficient, and can be easily installed in your existing firebox for a warm, contemporary feel with a rustic touch.

Furnaces

In many homes, the furnace is the heart of the heating system. A quality furnace installation can make your home cozy year-round and will last many years. Mid-efficiency and high-efficiency natural gas and propane furnaces are, in many cases, the most economical heating solution over the long term - they're reasonably inexpensive to install, and the low cost of natural gas will provide comfortable heating to the entire house for the life of the furnace. Replacing your old oil-fired furnace with a new mid- or high-efficiency Natural Gas unit is one of the best ways to increase the value of your home while reducing your monthly heating bill. And, with grants of up to $1000 available from Terasen Gas, Sensible Heating can show you how to minimize the initial cost of replacing your old furnace!

Water Heaters

Hot water
Hot water systems have evolved a lot in the last few years. You are no longer restricted to a plain old electric water heater - the new natural gas units are much more efficient, allowing you to drastically reduce your water heating costs every year.

For installations where space is at a premium, or where the distance between the water tank and an appliance or faucet is great, you have other options. Instantanious hot water systems such as those made by Rennai can be installed in a closet or other out-of-the-way space, and provide hot water within seconds of turning on the faucet. Since there's no reservoir or tank, the water is heated as the need arises - creating an ultra-efficient water heating solution - and you'll never run out of hot water!

Radiant Floor Heat

Radiant floor heat is one of the least maintenance-intensive, long term heating solutions available. Imagine having warm floors, all day every day. Mutliple zones allow you to control the heat in each room or series of rooms, and the heat emanating from the floor heats the house evenly and completely.

Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRV)

The guts of an HRV
A Heat Recovery Ventilator, or HRV, collects the heat from stale, wet air from bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and other locations, and pre-heats the pre-filtered, fresh air from outside with this energy before introducing it into the general airflow throughout the house. This has the benefit of not only reducing allergens and keeping the air in your home fresh and clean, but also reduces heat loss from the house by expelling warm air and replacing it with cold outside air, as happens in buildings without HRV's installed. An HRV can be added to most existing forced-air heating systems, making it an economical and healthy choice for allergy sufferers and anyone who wants to save money on their heating bill!
